The VIN and paper trail tell a story. Learn to decode them and you’ll never overpay for a mystery truck again.
A truck’s VIN and service records are the closest thing to a background check. Knowing how to read them protects you from surprises.
What the VIN tells you
The 17-character VIN encodes the manufacturer, model, engine family, model year, and plant. Confirm it matches across the title, door jamb, and frame — mismatches are a major red flag for a rebuilt or cloned unit.
Service history essentials
- In-frame or overhaul records — and the mileage they were done at.
- Aftertreatment/DPF service and any recurring fault history.
- Recent PM (preventive maintenance): oil, filters, coolant.
- Accident or bodywork indicators.
On every RoadRig24 listing we publish the VIN and the key specs up front, and we share the full inspection file on request. No mystery iron.
