The single biggest spec decision is cab type. It drives your purchase price, fuel economy, and what loads you can realistically run.
When a day cab makes sense
Day cabs are lighter, cheaper, and more maneuverable — ideal for local and regional work where you’re home every night: port drayage, construction, dump, and short regional runs. Less weight means more payload and better fuel numbers.
When you need a sleeper
If you run OTR (over-the-road) and spend nights out, a sleeper pays for itself in avoided motel costs and driver retention. Consider roof height and sleeper size based on how much time you actually live in the truck.
- Flat-top / mid-roof: better aerodynamics and clearance for pulling reefers or flatbeds.
- Raised-roof / condo: stand-up room, fridge, bunk heater — best for team or long solo runs.
- Consider APU pre-wiring to cut idle fuel burn.
